In what will surely go into the HRM "Ironic getaway follies" folder, a local man attempted to flee the scene of an assualt by asking two people in a nearby car for help – who turned out to be undercover police officers. From Halifax Police:
One Halifax man will likely not be saying ‘there is never a cop
around when you need one’ after he was arrested last night following
an incident on Quinpool Road.
Police were called to a disturbance in the 6300 block of Quinpool Road
after a man was assaulted. While Patrol units responded to the scene,
the suspect attempted to flee the area by enlisting the help of two
people in a nearby vehicle who were only too happy to assist. The two
motorists were undercover officers with the Central Division Quick
Response Unit who were able to arrest the suspect without incident. The
victim was not injured and the suspect was released to appear in court
at a later date charged with assault.
The Quick Response Unit is an important part of Halifax Regional
Police’s crime reduction strategy and there is a separate unit for
each of our three divisions. The members in these Units usually work in
a plain clothes capacity and address crime and quality of life issues.
