Halifax Regional Police have charged a man following an investigation into a child being left unattended in a vehicle.
At 3:34 p.m. on August 18, police responded to a parkade in the 5800 block of University Avenue for a report of a toddler locked in an unattended vehicle. Police located the vehicle and observed a child buckled in a car seat in the back seat. Officers could not locate any adults in the immediate area and determined that the child, who was crying, sweating and was in distress. The officers broke a window of the vehicle, as all the windows were up, and removed the child, who was then checked and medically cleared by paramedics. The father of the child later showed up at the vehicle. The Department of Community Services was contacted and attended the scene.
As part of the investigation, police arrested a 44-year-old Bedford man without incident on August 26. He is scheduled to appeared in Halifax Provincial Court on October 17 to face charges of abandoning a child and criminal negligence.
