Man Charged After Leaving Child in Van in September

Investigators in the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged a man following an investigation into a child being left unattended in a vehicle last September.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on September 20, 2015, police responded to the area of College and Summer Streets in Halifax for a report of a baby locked in an unattended minivan. Police located the van and observed a baby in a child seat in the rear portion of the vehicle. Officers could not locate any adults in the immediate area and determined that the baby, who was crying and sweating, was in distress. The officers broke a window of the van and removed the baby, who was then checked by paramedics. A man, who was determined to be the father of the child, showed up at the vehicle shortly thereafter. The Department of Community Services was contacted and attended the scene.

As part of the investigation, police arrested a 55-year-old Halifax man without incident on February 4 at Police Headquarters. He appeared in Halifax Provincial Court this morning to face a charge of abandoning a child. His name is being withheld as there is a publication ban in effect that stipulates no information can be released that could potentially identify the child in this matter.
