RCMP release:
The Special Victim Section of the RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division has charged a man in relation to historical sexual assaults that occurred in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
In June 2023, police began an investigation after receiving reports of historical sexual assaults. Officers learned that the incidents occurred in the late 1980s at an elementary school in Eastern Passage and in the 1990s at a home in Lucasville.
The two victims were youths at the time of the offences and, the man involved was in a position of trust in relation to one of the victims.
On October 20, Steve Hutchins, 59, turned himself in to police at the Halifax Regional Police headquarters where he was safely arrested.
Hutchins, who was later released on conditions, has been charged with two counts of Sexual Assault and one count of Sexual Interference. He is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on December 11, 2023, at 9:30 a.m.
Sexual assaults have a devastating impact on survivors. Investigators take a survivor-centered, trauma-informed approach to sexualized violence and want survivors to know police can help. Anyone who feels they are or, could be a survivor of sexual assault, is encouraged to contact their local RCMP detachment or police service.
No further information will be disclosed to protect the identity of the victims.
