Man charged in relation to Downey Road shooting

RCMP release:

The RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division has charged a man with First Degree Murder in relation to a homicide that occurred in North Preston.

On March 14, RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment, with assistance from Halifax Regional Police, responded to a report of a shooting on Downey Rd.

The victim of the shooting, 18-year-old Dieago Downey, later died in hospital as a result of his injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.

Through the course of the investigation, with the assistance of RCMP Forensic Identification Services and the execution of search warrants, investigators identified a man involved in the incident and a second victim, a 29-year-old North Preston man that was targeted the day of the incident.

On June 12, officers located and safely arrested a 26-year-old man in Dartmouth.

Daniel Romeo Downey has been charged with First Degree Murder and Attempt to Commit Murder. This morning, he appeared in Dartmouth Provincial Court and was remanded into custody. Downey is scheduled to return to court on July 2, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

The investigation, led by the Special Investigations Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division, remains ongoing.

Investigators are urging witnesses to come forward and contact police at 902-420-5020.
