RCMP release:
Yarmouth Town RCMP Detachment has charged a man with sexual offences and possession of weapon as part of an investigation into sexual offences that occurred in the 1990s and early 2000s.
In December, officers began an investigation into sexual offences that occurred between 1995 and 2000. The victim, who was a youth at the time, was sexually assaulted by a man known to them.
On January 7, Lunenburg District RCMP executed a search warrant at a property in Yarmouth as part of the investigation. Investigators seized child sexual abuse and exploitation material, several electronic devices, and numerous prohibited weapons.
Officers safely arrested John Lonny Lumsden, 69, of Yarmouth, at the time of the search warrant execution. He is charged with Sexual Interference, Possession of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Materials, and Possession of Prohibited Weapons. Lumsden had a first court appearance on January 8 and remains in custody pending future court appearances.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims in Yarmouth from approximately 1995 to the early 2000s.
Supports are available, including through RCMP Victim Services, and anyone affected is encouraged to come forward. Survivors can discuss incidents with officers before deciding to participate in an investigation and court process. The RCMP recognizes the lasting impact sexual offences can have on victims, including stress, shame, and fear. There is no time limit on these types of offences, even if a significant number of years have passed. RCMP investigators are committed to seeking justice regardless of how much time has passed.
