Man charged with criminal negligence in 2018 workplace fatality

Investigators in the Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged a man in relation to the 2018 workplace fatality of Brandon Alcorn.

On March 13, 2018 at approximately 10:15 a.m., police responded to a report of a workplace injury at a construction site at 650 Cutler Drive in Dartmouth. Brandon Larry Alcorn, 22, of Halifax, had fallen from the roof of a store that was under construction. He was transported to hospital by EHS where he passed away later that day as a result of his injuries.

After careful consideration of all factors of the investigation, investigators determined that there were grounds to lay a charge of criminal negligence causing death in relation to Brandon’s death.

On November 30, 2019 investigators arrested Jeff Scott Gooch, 37, of Halifax, without incident. He is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on February 25, 2020 to face one count of criminal negligence causing death. Gooch was employed as a worksite supervisor at the time of the incident.
