Management Commission Sets Accessibility Rules for MLA Offices

The House of Assembly Management Commission today, Aug. 14, passed new rules to make MLA offices across the province more accessible.

The rules require new MLAs to meet the barrier-free requirements as stated in the province’s building code within a year of being elected.

Re-elected MLAs must meet the rules within 36 months.

“I’m very pleased these regulations were passed today,” said Speaker Gordie Gosse. “Since I had my first meeting on this issue five months ago, it has been a priority to establish these standards. I’m happy MLA offices across the province will be more accessible so all constituents can easily visit them.

“I want to thank staff at the Speaker’s Office and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for their hard work and the quick turnaround.”

Barrier-free requirements include things such as a paved parking lot with at least one van accessible space, a cut curb, ramp, level entrances, wider doors and accessible washrooms among others.
