People can take advantage of exciting March break activities at Nova Scotia Museum sites with pirates, sea creatures, bugs and Jack the Kangaroo.
“This March break is an excellent opportunity for families to visit the museums and learn about true stories and myths of the past, and interesting creatures from around the world,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince.
“The amazing teams at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Industry are committed to providing a fun and educational experience during March break, especially for young people.”
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax is giving people the chance to discover the realities and folklore of piracy, both modern and historical. Pirates of Nova Scotia: Legends and Lies! runs until March 23. The museum invites people to come dressed as a pirate, and to learn the many truths and myths about pirates, life at sea, navigation, weapons, Oak Island and more.
“If you’re an aspiring pirate or someone who wants to add more to your character, jump aboard ship at the Maritime Museum this March Break for a chance to let your inner pirate out,” said Lee Schuette, curator of Visitor Experience and Engagement. “Learn how to curl up in a hammock, tell time by the stars, fire a cannon and use a boarding axe to demand what you want. Visit Pirates of Nova Scotia: Legends and Lies!, and find out how much fun the old ways really were.”
The Museum of Natural History, also in Halifax is hosting an exhibit with beautiful animals from the land down under. Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo is featuring Jack the Kangaroo and other animals from Australia from March 8-16. The museum is also featuring Bugs: Outside the Box, the new exhibit that takes a big look at little bugs. For March break, the museum is adding live bugs, bug eating, crafts and hands-on fun for people of all ages.
The Museum of Industry in Stellarton is giving visitors a chance to swim beneath the waves with Sea Creatures. Kids can imagine they are spending a day at the beach, touch common sea animals from Nova Scotia’s shores, paint a scene on a shell, or learn to fold an origami fish. People are invited to dress as their favorite pirate, mermaid, sponge or sea monster for a chance to win a prize. The Seaside Fashion Show will be at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day from March 8-16. Visitors who are brave enough can have their picture taken in the tentacles of a giant sea monster, the Kraken. The Museum of Industry’s popular plasma cars will be back too.
