Here's an overview of what's going on next week:

  • With Toonie Matinees at Empire Theatres, you can enjoy some family favourites for only $2, such as Planet 51, Astro Boy, Fantastic Mr Fox and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Various times and locations – check Empire's website for details. March 15-19.
  • The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has a variety of daily activities for the family to enjoy. Hands-on events include building model frigates, destroyers or other naval ships out of recycled milk cartons and other materials. There will also be a pirate hunt and the chance to dress up like sailors from the past century, and a navy-themed display called Lego: Navy Town created by members of the Nova Scotia Lego Users Group. For more details, including admission costs, click here. March 13-21.
  • Sticky Kids in Fall River has different activities happening each day, such as decorating rocks and t-shirts, St Patrick's Day themed activities, face painting and a talent show. Check here for all the details. Normal admission costs on Monday-Wednesday, but Friday is $10 if you stay for lunch. Your ABC Family Card gets you 10% off admission – buy your card online here or at Sticky Kids! March 15, 16, 17 and 19.
  • Hatfield Farms in Hammonds Plains is extending its Family Round-ups so you can catch one four times a day during March Break! Covered chuck wagons, rubber rodeo, petting zoo and playground fun. Click here for departure times and more info. March 13-21.
  • Claytime Pottery in Bedford will be firing up the BBQ between 11:30am and 1:30pm with a hot dog and pop for $2. Get those creative juices flowing by participating in their Easter themed painting contest: when you purchase a project you will receive and egg or bunny ornament to paint to enter into the contest. With your ABC Family Card you get 15% off regularly priced items. 10am-9pm March 15-19.
  • You can also get creative with the Art Galley of Nova Scotia's Sketching in the Gallery drop-ins. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2-3:30pm, this informal program is a great way to learn some new drawing skills, and refine those you have, as you join others in different gallery spaces to visually respond to the artworks and the people you see around you! More details here .
  • The Discovery Centre is a happening place during March Break with science demonstrations and hi-def films in their theatre, and, of course, the wonderful Lego exhibit. For an additional fee, there is also a chemistry workshop called "Yuck and other Stuff".  Check out their website here for all the details (Please note your ABC Family Card is not valid at the Discovery Centre during March Break, but will be back to normal offering you a free child's admission each visit after that week!)
  • Pure Images in Mic Mac Mall will be 'shooting for food' for Feed Nova Scotia in the afternoon of Friday, March 19. Bring 5 cans/boxes of non-perishable foods for Feed Nova Scotia and you will receive a mini photo shoot and one complimentary digital file. Great for posting to Facebook and showing off our kids to our friends! Drop in or call first to book an appointment. More details are available here. Pure Images is also a member of the ABC Family Card
  • There's too much going on at the Halifax Public Libraries during March Break to list here. Details of all ages or under 5 activities are listed in our calendar, and the libraries' website has details of all the rest. Some of the highlights include Mad Science for ages 5-12 at Keshen Goodman on Monday, Spring Garden Road and JD Shatford on Tuesday, Cole Harbour and Halifax North on Wednesday, and Bedford on Friday; world music and folk music with Shanou on Tuesday at Tantallon and Friday at Musquodoboit Harbour (all ages); a St. Patrick’s Day Carnival at Alderney Gate on Wednesday (all ages); plus movie afternoons, puppet shows, magic shows and lots, lots more! And all free!
  • Shubenacadie Wildlife Park is open during March Break from 9am to 1pm during the week and 9am-3pm on March 13-14 and March 20-21. Admission is only $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for youth, and children 5 and under are free! Every day during the week there are special activities for an extra $2 per child – Monday is owl day, Tuesday is moose day, Wednesday is Sable Island Day, Thursday is Greenwing bird nest boxes day (best for kids ages 8 and up), and Friday is Cattail day. Also on March 17 from 7-9pm there is a Sable Island Presentation with a Night Tour and on March 19 from 10-11:30am there is a guided hike on St Andrew's Marsh Trail – you must register ahead of time for both of these events. For more information on all the activities click here.
  • There's a different farm-based theme every day at Ross Farm, with lots of hands on activities for everyone to enjoy and crafts that everyone can participate in throughout the day. And yummy hot chocolate! The traditional toys activities on Saturday March 20th sound particularly fun to me, but there's lots of fun happening on all the other days too. Admission isn't too bad with $6 for adults, $2 for kids 6-17 and kids under 5 free. March 13-21.
  • At the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg there will be daily crafts and games for all ages, with an opportunity to create a new flag for the museum: everyone is invited to come in any time during March Break and design a flag that represents the museum, and at the end of the week a winner will be picked and that design made into an actual flag to be flown during 2010. All creations will be displayed for visitors to view during the summer. Admission during the week is only $4 for adults and kids under 17 are free. For details on all the activities and crafts during the week, click here.

Wow, that's a lot of stuff! Have fun!
