The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is launching its annual charitable donation campaign and hosting Christmas at Sea activities to share old and new traditions during the winter season.

“We see the museum as a community gathering place, especially during the holidays,” said Kim Reinhardt, general manager, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. “It’s the season for learning and giving back to others.”

Since the mid 1900’s, festively wrapped shoeboxes have been delivered to seafarers in port during the holiday season. The museum is continuing this tradition, known today as the Halifax Mission to Seafarers Shoebox, and encourages everyone to participate by donating personal care items, mittens and scarves.

Donations will be delivered to international merchant seafarers stationed at Halifax Harbour over Christmas. The deadline for donations is Thursday, Dec. 15. Donations can be dropped off at the museum, 1675 Lower Water St., Halifax.

A Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10, where families can learn about a time when Christmas tree ornaments were a new idea. Families will have the chance to make their own decorations while enjoying festive snacks.

The holiday exhibit, LEGO: City by the Sea, is celebrating its 10th year. There will once again be a LEGO model competition for seven to 18-year-olds who are inspired by the museum and the sea, and want to share their creations in the museum’s display.
