HRM release:

Location: Highway 111, between Massachusetts Avenue ramps and the Windsor Street Exchange

Date: Beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, continuing until the completion of overpass construction by the end of 2027

Time: 24/7

Work details: These changes will improve safety and traffic flows for road users and construction crews while preparations continue for the upcoming Windsor Street Exchange project, including the future construction of a new overpass and road realignments.

Traffic impacts: The ramp connecting Massachusetts Avenue to Highway 111 toward the Windsor Street Exchange and Bedford Highway will be closed, with a marked detour in place for the duration of the overpass construction. Access from Massachusetts Avenue toward the MacKay Bridge will remain open.

Transit impacts: Halifax Transit routes 135, 136, 137 and 138 will continue to follow detour routes for the duration of the ongoing project preparation work and throughout project construction. For bus stop impacts and detour routing, including maps, please visit the Halifax Transit service disruptions page here

Safety in construction zones: To protect both drivers and construction crews, the speed limit in the Highway 111 construction zone has been reduced to 50 km/h. The municipality is reminding drivers to follow all posted safety signage and be aware that speed fines double in construction zones.

Rumble strips are being installed at the entrance to the construction zone from the MacKay Bridge to alert drivers to slow down and maintain a safe speed. Rumble strips are also being added along the altered centreline to alert drivers to the lane realignment and help guide them safely through the work area.
