Massive cheese recall linked to Listeria may have reached Halifax stores and restaurants

A national food recall covering dozens of shredded and processed cheese products is now in effect across Canada after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency flagged possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination — and some of those products may have reached Halifax-area restaurants and institutions.

The recall, last updated April 2, covers 40 products across several brands including Bothwell, Paradise Island, Goldstream, Sysco Reliance, Only Goodness, and Western Family. The contamination is microbial, meaning affected products may not look or smell spoiled even if they pose a health risk.

The greater concern for Halifax is the Sysco Reliance line. Sysco distributes food products across Atlantic Canada to hotels, restaurants, institutions, and food manufacturers, and several of their shredded cheese products are included in the recall, among them cheddar, mozzarella, nacho mix, parmesan, and mexi-mix blends, all in large bulk formats. Whether any affected product reached local kitchens has not been confirmed, but the distribution network makes it a real possibility.

On the retail side, Bothwell, a Manitoba-based cheesemaker whose Shredded Three Cheese Nacho Blend is included in the recall, distributes nationally through Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore, Walmart, Costco, and Giant Tiger. The brand can occasionally be found in the deli and specialty cheese sections of those stores, though it is not widely stocked in Atlantic Canada. Still, anyone who purchased Bothwell Shredded Three Cheese Nacho Blend in 400g or 1kg bags with best-before dates of June 11 or June 12, 2026 should not consume it.

Most other brands in the recall, including Only Goodness and Western Family, are private label products tied to Save-On-Foods, a western Canadian chain with no presence in Atlantic Canada.
