Media Release – Mayor Savage joins Turkey Club

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage will kick off this year’s membership drive for The Turkey Club by buying the first membership at 1pm on Monday November 14th at the Mayor’s office at 1841 Argyle Street, Halifax.

“Mayor Savage has been a big supporter of the Turkey Club”, says Darrell Geddes, chair of the Turkey Club membership committee.

“The Turkey Club has a simple goal of helping make a brighter, happier holiday season for those families who are struggling by providing them a full Christmas turkey dinner with all the fixings”,  says Geddes.

For a $100 individual membership or $250 business membership, each person or business becomes a member for a year, is provided with either a lapel pin or door sticker recognizing membership in the club, and given a charitable tax receipt. They are also promised that 100% of their membership donation will go directly to buying needy families a Christmas turkey dinner.

Last year, the month long membership drive raised $27,269 providing enough money to help 360 struggling families with a complete Christmas Turkey dinner.

“ThThe are still more families out there that need our help”, said Geddes.

The Turkey Club, a fundraising program at The Parker Street Food Bank, was founded by the late Jack Cruickshank in 2004. Cruickshank, a well-known businessman, co-founder of CFDR Radio Station, a member of the Board of Directors of Air Canada and President of the National Association of Canadian Race Tracks, was perhaps best known for operating Sackville Downs Raceway for over 30 years.  He passed away in October 2011 leaving the charity group, The Turkey Club, as one of his legacies to The Parker Street Food Bank.

“Our ask may be simple but it is incredibly important  – this holiday, help make Christmas brighter, become a Turkey Club member and provide a family in need with a full Turkey dinner”, says Geddes.
