Members of Unifor MWF 1 have agreed to postpone job action and return to the bargaining table

Members of Unifor MWF 1 have agreed to postpone job action and return to the bargaining table with Irving Shipbuilding on Monday June 18, 2018.

“Irving has informed us they are prepared to make a good faith effort to address some of the concerns raised by our members so on this basis we will extend the strike deadline and return to the table,” said Adam Hersey, Business Agent for Unifor Local MWF 1, which represents more than 800 members who proudly build vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy.

A tentative agreement was rejected by 75 per cent of members on Wednesday, sending a strong message to the employer that workers want more respect in the work place and an agreement that is fair and includes mechanisms to quickly resolve workplace disputes.

The union will be in a legal strike position but believes it is in the best interest of members, the company and the country to avoid a work stoppage.

Out of respect for the collective bargaining process, the union will have no further comment until bargaining is concluded.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
