Economic development and improving the lives of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq were topics at the fifth meeting of the provincial cabinet and the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs at Glooscap First Nation today, May 20.
The meeting brought together cabinet ministers and the chiefs from Mi’kmaq communities to discuss economic development and ways to co-operate on land use and management.
“This meeting is an opportunity for us to reaffirm our nation-to-nation relationship, and to work with the provincial government on an array of important issues,” said Chief Sidney Peters, assembly co-chair. “Today’s discussions will hopefully lead us to tangible results for our Mi’kmaq communities.”
“Our relationship with the Mi’kmaq is extremely important, and these joint meetings offer a chance to have open and productive discussions about the issues that can shape the way government works with First Nations in Nova Scotia,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “Together we share a commitment to ensuring a vibrant and prosperous Nova Scotia and improving the health and well-being of the Mi’kmaq and communities across the province.”
The assembly and provincial cabinet meet annually to review progress and set priorities. The meeting helps guide ongoing discussions about economic, social and governance issues.
The province is engaged with the Mi’kmaq in a number of processes, including the Made-in-Nova Scotia Process, the Mi’kmaq-Nova Scotia-Canada Tripartite Forum and the terms of reference for a Mi’kmaq-Nova Scotia-Canada Consultation Process.
