Multiple road closures and transit detours (Posted June 26 2025)

Halifax drivers and transit users should prepare for significant delays and detours as a series of construction projects get underway across the city beginning this week. Municipal crews will be carrying out infrastructure upgrades, utility work, and development-related projects at several key locations.

Dutch Village Road: long-term detour begins July 1

Starting Tuesday, July 1, Dutch Village Road will be closed to southbound traffic between Supreme Court and Bayers Road as part of the Complete Streets recapitalization project. The closure is in effect 24/7 until Friday, August 22. Northbound traffic from Joseph Howe Drive will still be permitted.

Intersections at Rosedale, Frederick, Rufus, Westerwald, Sunnybrae, and Central avenues will also be closed. Local access will be available via Alex Street. Detours will be marked, and traffic personnel will be on-site. Drivers should expect delays and use alternative routes.

Transit detours: Routes 28 and 137 will be rerouted both inbound and outbound, with multiple bus stops along Dutch Village Road and Rosedale Avenue temporarily closed. Full transit information is available on the Halifax Transit website.

Barrington Street: overnight lane reductions on June 26 and 27

On Thursday and Friday night, June 26 and 27, Barrington Street will be reduced to a single lane between Spring Garden Road and Sackville Street from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. to allow for the installation of a natural gas service. Stop-and-go traffic will be in effect, and drivers are advised to avoid the area during overnight hours.

South Park Street: full closure for utility work July 2–11

South Park Street will be closed to all traffic between Inglis and Rhuland streets beginning Wednesday, July 2 through Saturday, July 5, and again from Monday, July 7 to Friday, July 11. The 24/7 closure is required to complete underground utility connections.

Sidewalks and bikeways will also be closed. Pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured via Lucknow Street.

Transit detours: Routes 4, 10A, 10B, and 24 will be rerouted in both directions. A number of bus stops along South Park Street, Inglis Street, and Victoria Road will be temporarily out of service. Riders are advised to check Halifax Transit’s website for updated detour maps.

Granville Street: one-day closure for crane delivery on July 2

On Wednesday, July 2, Granville Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. between George and Prince streets for a crane delivery tied to nearby development. Traffic control signs will be in place, and pedestrians are advised to use alternate crosswalks on Barrington and Hollis streets.

For more information and detailed transit detours, residents are encouraged to visit Halifax Transit’s website or contact the Public Affairs Office at 902-490-5940.
