Municipal Offices, Recreation Facilities Will Open at 1 p.m. Today

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that all municipal offices and customer service centres in the region will open at 1 p.m. today. The municipality thanks residents for their ongoing patience and cooperation during this storm.

Most areas received between 20 and 35 centimetres of snow overnight, although drifting in some areas resulted in higher amounts. Light snow is expected to continue until about noon and current forecasts are showing another small weather system approaching late tonight, which is expected to bring flurries overnight into Wednesday.

Delaying opening has helped significantly with clearing efforts this morning and encouraged many others to stay off the roads until it is safer to travel.

The majority of main arterial streets have been plowed but are still snow-covered. Visibility was an issue overnight, as well as streets and sidewalks being filled back by blowing snow after they were plowed. Cleanup on all streets and sidewalks will continue today and tonight until all routes are complete.

Recreation facilities also delayed opening this morning. Most facilities will be open as of 1 p.m. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for further updates on closures and cancellations. Contact information for municipally operated facilities is online at http://www.halifax.ca/rec/reccentres.php.

Most Halifax Transit buses have returned to regular routing, although a couple still remain on snow plans. Updates on individual bus routes are available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at http://www.halifax.ca/transit.

The overnight winter parking ban will be enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10. Residents are also reminded that under Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, vehicles can be ticketed and/or towed any time they’re interfering with snow clearing.
