Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following program and service level adjustments that are coming into effect as we head into the Labour Day long weekend:

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services:

The majority of municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Labour Day. Please contact your individual facility in advance to confirm operating hours.

All municipal beaches will be closed to supervised swimming (lifeguards on site) for the year at 5 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 31). Know your swimming limitations if you choose to swim in unsupervised bodies of water. Always swim with a buddy in supervised areas and adults should never leave children unsupervised in the water.

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours:

No municipal solid waste collection services will take place on Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 5. Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday will occur instead on the preceding Saturday (Sept. 3).

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax Recycling Plant and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 5, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday, Sept. 3. The residential Household Special Waste (HSW) Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Dr. will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 3, and will reopen on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick-up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Service:

Halifax Transit buses and ferries will be operating on holiday schedules on Labour Day, Sept. 5. For detailed holiday schedules by individual route, visit www.halifax.ca/transit/Schedules/index.php.

Parking:

On-street parking meter spaces are free on Labour Day, however motorists must abide by other posted signage.

311 Citizen Contact Centres:

The 311 Call Centre will be operating on regular hours, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Labour Day, Sept. 5. The five Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Labour Day, and reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

We hope all residents have a safe and enjoyable Labour Day weekend.
