Municipal services in effect over Christmas and New Year’s

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal service levels in effect over the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays.

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours:

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 25, Sunday, Dec. 30, and Tuesday, Jan. 1, but will be open Saturday, Dec. 22, Monday, Dec. 24 (closes at 5 p.m.), Wednesday, Dec. 26, Saturday, Dec. 29, Monday, Dec. 31 (closes at 5 p.m.) and Wednesday, January 2.

The Halifax Recycling Plant and municipal composting facilities will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, but will be open during regular operating hours on Saturday, Dec. 22, Wednesday, Dec. 26, and Saturday, Dec. 29.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed Saturday, Dec. 22 and Saturday, Dec. 29, but will be open for regular operating hours on Saturday, Jan. 5.

There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection services on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Collection services will instead take place the preceding Saturdays, Dec. 22 and Dec. 29.

Regular collection services will be provided on Boxing Day, Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services:

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service schedules on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Please note there is no Alderney or Woodside Ferry service in operation on either Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Buses and ferries will also operate on holiday service on Boxing Day. Halifax Transit is pleased to once again offer free, extended bus and Alderney Ferry service on New Year’s Eve from 6 p.m. onward, in support of M.A.D.D. Halifax Region. Volunteers from M.A.D.D. will be at both Alderney Ferry terminals, accepting donations.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services:

Many recreation facilities with the exception of the Emera Oval, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Please call ahead to your individual facility in advance to confirm complete holiday operating hours: www.halifax.ca/rec/reccentres.php.

Customer Contact Centres:

The 311 Contact Centre will be closed for general inquires on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Customers may still call 311 for urgent requests concerning transportation, municipal operations, facilities, animal services and illegally parked vehicles.

The five Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments Monday to Friday, will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, reopening Wednesday, Jan. 2.
