Municipal services on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10

Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following service levels in effect on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10: Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours: No municipal solid waste collection services will take place on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10. Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday will occur instead on the preceding Saturday, Oct. 8. Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick-up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day. The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax Recycling Facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday, Oct. 8. The residential Household Special Waste (HSW) Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 8, and will re-open on Saturday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note a mobile Household Special Waste drop off event will also be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Mic Mac Mall Lower Parking Lot, located at 21 Micmac Boulevard, Dartmouth. Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services: Halifax Transit will have MacKay Bridge shuttles in effect for the Thanksgiving weekend Oct. 7-9, beginning on Friday evening, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until the end of service on Sunday, Oct. 9, due to the Macdonald Bridge weekend closure. For MacKay Bridge shuttle schedules visit www.halifax.ca/transit/Schedules/documents/MacKayBridgeShuttle_Schedule.pdf.   Please note there will be no shuttles in effect on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10, and all routes that normally travel the Macdonald Bridge will instead detour directly over the MacKay Bridge. Drop-offs at all bus stops along the detoured route will be accommodated. Both Halifax Transit buses and ferries will be operating on holiday schedules on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10. Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services: The majority of municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10. Please contact your individual facility in advance to confirm operating hours. The Emera Oval will be open on Thanksgiving Monday, with free rentals of inline and roller skates, scooters, bikes, trikes, skateboards, helmets and other safety equipment, available from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Valid government-issued photo I.D. required for equipment borrowing. Parking: On-street parking meter spaces are free on Thanksgiving Monday, however motorists must abide by other posted signage. 311 Citizen Contact Centres: The 311 Call Centre will be operating on regular hours, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 10. The five Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, Oct. 10, and re-open for regular business hours on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
