The Halifax Regional Municipality will be enacting by-law amendments on Monday, Oct. 15, prohibiting smoking on all municipal property.

Halifax Regional Council recently voted to prohibit smoking or vaping any substance, including tobacco and cannabis, on municipal property except in designated locations. The municipality committed to enacting the by-law amendments by Oct. 17, when the federal government legalizes recreational cannabis.

Municipal staff is currently determining the initial locations for designated smoking/vaping areas, to be ready for Oct. 15.

In the coming days an online map will be posted to the municipal website, Halifax.ca, indicating designated smoking areas that have been approved to date. This map will be regularly updated as designated sites are approved.

A dedicated e-mail address will also be made available soon, via Halifax.ca, providing residents with a means to submit requests for specific locations to be designated as smoking areas.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit Halifax.ca for updates and more details as they become available.
