Municipality helps residents with well water shortages

The Halifax Regional Municipality is initiating a program to offer drinking water and shower facilities for those dealing with significantly low well water levels.

Drought-like weather conditions over the past few months have caused well water issues in several areas of the region, with the problem being particularly acute in communities along the Eastern Shore and Prospect.

As a result, the municipality is working to ensure residents with urgent dry well issues have access to drinking water and shower facilities.

The municipality is making available several facilities across the region where affected residents can access drinking water and showers until conditions improve. The complete facility list can be found athttps://www.halifax.ca/fire-police/fire/emergency-management/water-shortage.

Please note the times and days of the week when water supplies and shower facilities will be available, and note some facilities may be subject to water conservation restrictions.

Halifax Water recently instituted mandatory water-use restrictions for customers served by the Lake Major Water Supply Plant. Lake Major serves the communities of Dartmouth, Eastern Passage, Westphal, North Preston, and Cole Harbour. Residents on wells who are experiencing water shortage issues are strongly encouraged to contact 311 so the municipality can better assess the magnitude of the problem and provide assistance as needed.

The current issue has been brought on by three months of dry weather and it is anticipated it will take a considerable amount of rain and time for water levels to return to normal. Although some rain has fallen this week, it is not expected to be enough to reconcile the current deficit.

Our collective response to this situation requires a sustained commitment to water conservation over the coming weeks and months, and residents are urged to assist one another in this time of need.
