Municipality launches public engagement campaign on voter participation

Monday, March 2, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality today initiated a public engagement process to stimulate discussion and ideas on how to increase voter participation in municipal elections, including the next one set to take place on Oct. 15, 2016.

The public engagement process begins today with the launch of an online forum and questions for consideration on the Shape Your City Halifax portal – where themes such as voter engagement, young and new voters, ways to cast your ballot, and accessibility will be put forward with the goal of stimulating discussion and generating feedback.

Over the seven-week campaign additional public participation opportunities will be rolled out to assist the municipal election office with capturing ideas and recommendations to increase voter engagement including: an online survey, social media interaction with the Twitter handle @hfxelections, street team pop-ups at various locations throughout the region, as well as an interactive half day webcast event at the Halifax Central Library on Saturday, April 11.

The municipal election office is encouraging all residents to get involved in this process, the results of which will help inform recommendations to Regional Council on future municipal elections.
