Friday, March 4, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – It was beginning to look a lot like spring in the Halifax region these last two weeks, but more seasonable temperatures have returned and we’re expecting up to 10 centimetres of snow as a nor’easter moves through Nova Scotia this weekend.
Forecasts are calling for the flakes to start after midnight tonight and continue falling steadily throughout the day on Saturday, March 5. There is also a chance of high winds and poor visibility due to blowing snow. Any change in the track of this weather system will have an impact on the amount of precipitation this area may receive.
Crews started applying brine on the streets yesterday and will continue with that work until the snow starts later tonight. Crews will also be out today salting the sidewalks across the municipality. Repairs to the municipal fleet are complete and all street and sidewalk equipment is ready for operation this weekend.
Halifax Transit staff will be assessing the weather and road conditions tonight and tomorrow. Updates on individual bus routes will be available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at http://www.halifax.ca/transit.
The municipal overnight parking ban will not be enforced tonight; however, residents are reminded that under Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, vehicles can be ticketed or towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing operations. A decision will be made tomorrow morning on the parking ban for tomorrow night.
Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather forecasts this weekend and be prepared to adjust their travel accordingly. Road conditions may change quickly and blowing snow could reduce visibility. Residents should also be prepared for challenges associated with bad weather, such as power outages.
