Municipality Seeking Artist for LGBTQ Community Art Project

Monday, May 25, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is looking for an artist or arts facilitator to work on a community art project that reflects the unique aspects of the local LGBTQ community.

The municipality is developing three entrance plazas on the Halifax Common as part of the North Park Intersection Redesign project. Each entrance plaza will feature a design sandblasted into concrete, created by artists in collaboration with one of three communities in the neighbourhood: the LGBTQ community, the African Nova Scotian community and the Aboriginal community.

The LGBTQ project will be part of the Citadel Gateway, the pedestrian plaza nearest the intersection of Cogswell Street and North Park Street. Construction of the plaza will begin later this spring, in alignment with the new roundabout being built at the same intersection.

Public consultations were held over the winter and members of the local LGBTQ community chose the theme of celebration and struggle as seen through the lens of history, as well as the recognition and importance of diversity and inclusion.

Two parallel projects representing the Aboriginal community and the African Nova Scotian community have also selected themes and will be seeking artists for those projects soon. There will be opportunities to make links with the other artists and communities working on these two projects.

The successful artist for the LGBTQ project will participate in community discussions hosted by Youth Project and the municipality this summer. This will help to inform, inspire and connect the artist with the community and ensure that the final design accurately expresses the voice of the community.

Those interested in applying for the LGBTQ project can mail their submission to:

Applicants can also drop their submission off in person at the George Dixon Recreation Center, 2502 Brunswick St., Halifax. The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15.

The North Park Intersection Redesign is the first major municipal roundabout project of its kind. This is about more than just reconfiguring two intersections — it is a bold approach to a larger civic project that includes many disciplines, departments and goals. Redesigning these two intersections allows for significant neighbourhood improvements, including upgraded street, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, community art and high quality public spaces.
