The Halifax Regional Municipality is requesting feedback from residents to help establish a new protocol for municipal election campaign finance accountability.
Public feedback will help inform a staff report to Regional Council as it develops a campaign finance by-law to lay out the rules governing everything from campaign spending limits, to maximum contribution amounts, as well as who is eligible to donate to a campaign. The by-law will also address expenditure disclosure requirements.
Campaign finance accountability public engagement meetings will be held in June. The meetings will also give residents the opportunity to provide insights regarding the overall 2016 municipal voter experience that will help inform efforts by the Municipal Election Office to improve service delivery.
Public meetings will be held in the following locations this month:
· Wednesday, June 7: 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Harbour East Community Council Meeting Room, 60 Alderney Drive (main floor), Dartmouth
· Monday, June 12: 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. | Old School Community Gathering Place, 7962 Highway #7, Musquodoboit Harbour (with the Halifax Green Network Plan Engagement)
· Wednesday, June 14: 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Halifax Hall at City Hall, Halifax
· Thursday, June 22: 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Bedford-Hammonds Plains Community Centre, 202 Innovation Drive, Bedford
Residents are also invited to submit their feedback on both municipal campaign finance accountably and 2016 municipal voter experience via online surveys at shapeyourcityhalifax.ca/campaign-finance-accountability.
