6, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that if they have a concern with a street light in their community, they should now report it online at www.halifax.ca.
On Aug. 1, 2014, the municipality took ownership and responsibility for street lights, including those in municipal parks and open spaces.
The only exceptions continue to be street lights on the 100-series highways, on- and off-ramps for the highways and the Circumferential Highway (Highway 111) between the MacKay Bridge and Pleasant Street. These street lights are owned by the province and should be reported to the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal by calling 902-424-5080.
There are almost 43,000 street lights in the Halifax region, 28,000 of which were previously owned and maintained by Nova Scotia Power. Consolidating ownership under the municipality will save money and provide more consistent service levels across all municipal districts.
Over the next five years the municipality will convert all street lights to LED technology. This will save more than $3 million a year in operating costs by reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.
Residents who notice a street light on during the day, burnt-out, flashing or flickering lights, damaged street lights or exposed wires can go to https://apps.halifax.ca/311 to file a report online. Simply select “Streets & Roads” under the drop-down category menu, click on the “Street Lighting Concerns” link and fill out the appropriate information fields. Residents also have the option of calling 311.
