My Dartmouth Love Story

My own connection to Dartmouth goes back a long, long way.  Long before I was even a twinkle in my father’s eye, his family was settling in Dartmouth during it’s infancy. In later years, my parents briefly lived in Dartmouth when I was born, so it was my first home.

Through my childhood and adolescence I came back here to live for a few short stays but I confess always considered myself to be from Halifax. It was not until I was in my late 20’s that I returned to Dartmouth for good and truly fell in love with it. And of course it started with a boy.

Thirteen years ago I met really a cute boy who would one day become my husband. At the time he lived in a funky one bedroom apartment in Central Dartmouth. He and his family had been in Dartmouth for the better part of 20 years and he had NO plans of leaving. He was and remains a true Dartmouth son.

I moved in with him because I was young and in love and I was pretty sure that I would be able to convince him to move back over the bridge with me eventually. Instead, and I am sure you have already guessed what happened next,  in addition to the boy, I also fell in love with this beautiful city of lakes.

Growing up on the other side of the harbour I thought I knew all about Dartmouth, but it turned out there was a LOT more to this town than than I thought. It is certainly much more than Halifax’s awkward little sibling. I found a city with a rich history, vibrant cultural diversity and a warm welcoming community.  Dartmouth became the setting for our love story, it’s where we made our life, our friends and our jobs. We got married here on the Dartmouth Common and bought our first house in a snug little subdivision of Dartmouth South. Dartmouth is our home, it is where we live and play and where we plan to get old together.

There are just so many things that I love about Dartmouth, I couldn’t possibly fit them all into one post so I’m not going to! Instead I am going to combine my nerdy love of history, photography and of course Dartmouth to explore all my favorite things about our fair city. I hope you will read along.
