[Editor’s note: I swear a lot today. You might want to stop your pre-teen from reading today’s post.]
L-A: Today was inspired by my morning commute. Travelling to Dartmouth everyday definitely has it’s downside, but the upside is the ferry ride. There’s something lovely about getting to sit back and enjoy the fresh air as you commute across the harbour. It’s more civilized than feeling like a sweaty sardine on the bus.
So, nautical stripe challenge + morning commute on a boat = boat inspired outfit! For starters, there is this to inspire my outfit:
The outfit was partly Gene inspired, minus the hat and dancing mouse. I wasn’t buying more than one hat for the challenge and animated mice are not cheap. They work for scale and we are currently not-for-profit here at FPQT. I limited the inspiration to Gene’s pants and t-shirt.
Next bit of inspiration came from this:

Tyra would probably say that I got lucky with this shot and that the rest of my film was horrible. And I’d be all, “but Tyra, I was on a boat! in wedges! Standing up was hard!” and then Nigel would make a face and Tyra would tell me not to make excuses becuase a real top model can work through the waves to deliver a pose. Which is why I’m not a top model.
Let’s break the outfit down:
– nautical stripes: Michael Kors – an outlet purchase from April. I didn’t get a clear shot of the shirt, so here’s the adorable detail on the shirt:

– trench coat: H&M from 2005 or 2006 (purchased in T.O.)
– jeans: I don’t remember the brand, but they are from Biscuit, purchased for New Year’s Eve 2008.
– shoes: Kenneth Coles from Comfort Zone (I’ve told you all about them before)
– socks: Joe Fresh. Normally, I would not pair these socks with those shoes, but I promised to step it up today. Here’s a close up:

So, y’all are probably giving me golf claps for breaking out the boat socks (if you are not, you should be). But you can save those golf claps for what I think is the pièce de résistance:
What’s up with the anchor you ask? Well, in preparation for my alumni booze cruise, I decided that I needed a nautical themed pashmina afghan (see above video). I don’t know where you can buy one of these: so I made one! I embroidered the anchor onto a navy pashmina I already owned (purchased from the place in Park Lane that always sells pashminas for $10). If you can’t embroider and really want one of these, my guess is that dollars to donuts, SkyMall has one.
I should have saved this outfit for Day 7. I don’t think I can top this one. I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty proud of this one.
p.s. fun fact: if you have an iPhone or iPad and use the YouTube app to look for “On a Boat”, you won’t find the actual video that was posted by the group Lonely Island. You’ll find covers and you’ll find a “Making of…”, but you won’t find the video. Riddle me this tech-types: why can’t I get On a Boat to show up on YouTube apps?
