Free trees! HRM hosting two tree giveaway events

HRM release:

The Halifax Regional Municipality invites residents to participate in two upcoming tree giveaway events. A selection of tree varieties will be available, including a limited number of edible fruit trees. All giveaways are limited to one tree per person or one tree per household.

This year, the municipality is using a web-based registration form to manage demand. Residents must register in advance as walk-ins will not be accommodated. Approximately 1,000 trees (500 at each location) will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis using the registration form.

Event details:

Date: Saturday, August 24

Time: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Location: Head of St. Margarets Bay (details on the registration form)

Date: Saturday, August 31

Time: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Location: Halifax (details on the registration form)

These events are accessible by Halifax Transit and both locations are located near transit stops. Halifax Transit supports residents taking trees on transit. Barrier bags will be available for transport.

The municipality has planted over 2,600 trees last year in support of the Urban Forest Master Plan and HalifACT. Through tree planting, we reduce carbon, reduce water runoff, improve infiltration, and reduce the effects of urban area heat islands while offering shade and places of reprieve. To learn more about our urban forest and for complete details about our tree giveaway, visit halifax.ca/trees.

Through municipal investment and participation in the development of our urban forest, we work together to help achieve the important climate goals outlined in HalifACT. For more information about the municipality’s climate action plan, visit halifax.ca/climate.
