New Afrocentric book club at Salvation Army Spryfield

Rob Jeffery, co-pastor of the Spryfield Salvation Army community church and Family Resource Centre, wrote me last week to let me know about a new program for the community. Here’s Rob’s note:

“The Salvation Army, in conjunction with the Department of Education, is pleased to present the Spryfield community with a fun and exciting book club.

“Sally’s Book Club” is a fun and interactive book club that encourages family literacy. We are looking to have our club meet every two weeks. Participants will receive a new book at every meeting (so it’s a great chance to build up one’s home library). A facilitator will lead the group in a fun and lively discussion on certain aspects of the assigned book. They’ll also be treated to a fine meal after the meeting. Onsite day care will be available. The club will be grounded in an Afrocentric philosophy in keeping with the aims of the program.

There is no cost to joining. Members of the African Nova Scotian community are encouraged to take part, but of course – everyone is welcome.

The group will consist of 12 participants so sign up now before space runs out.

A meeting date and time will be confirmed soon, but we’re thinking that the group will likely meet on Saturdays, late morning, leading up to the noon hour.”
