Children and families who count on quality services at the IWK Health Centre will continue to receive excellent care with the province’s approval of electrical power upgrades, including a new generator for the hospital.
“When Nova Scotians need access to health care services they don’t want to worry about power failures, or the condition of the hospital’s emergency sources,” said Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson. “That’s why the province will provide financial support to enhance the IWK’s emergency power supplies.”
District health authorities and the IWK routinely submit a list of infrastructure needs to the province each year. This time, the hospital’s requests included power upgrades, specifically a new generator to replace the 35-year-old machine the hospital has now.
The IWK will now issue a request for proposals, with the work to be completed within 18 months of the tender being awarded.
“We are very pleased with government’s support for the replacement of our aging generator and supporting electrical systems,” said Allan Horsburgh, vice-president of operations and support services at the IWK Health Centre. “A lot of important services are backed up by these systems in cases of power failures, and we are glad that we will be able to continue to provide the safest environment in such situations for maritime patients and families needing care at the IWK.”
The upgrades will include a new generator and transformers.
