Halifax Water and Natural Forces Solar are pleased to announce the installation of Halifax Water’s 75 kW AC solar project has been completed and is now generating environmentally friendly power to the Nova Scotia Power electrical grid.

The Natural Forces Solar team completed the design, installation, and commissioning of the 226 panel solar Photo Voltaic (PV) system. These panels have the capacity to produce in excess of 100 Megawatt hours per year of electricity, which is equivalent to the electricity used by 11 Nova Scotia households, and will reduce CO2 emissions  by approximately 70 Tonnes annually.

”Halifax Water’s  mission is ‘To provide world-class services for our customers and our environment’. The addition of solar PV panels to the roof of Halifax Water’s largest wastewater treatment facility in downtown Halifax makes a critical piece of Halifax Water infrastructure more environmentally friendly,” said Cathie O’Toole, General Manager of Halifax Water.

The electricity generated by this solar PV system is being sold to Nova Scotia Power utilizing a 20-year contract, which was awarded to Halifax Water by the Nova Scotia Department of Energy and Mines through their Solar Electricity for Community Buildings program. In August 2020, Natural Forces Solar was awarded the tendered contract to supply and install the 75 kW AC solar photovoltaic system. Construction began in late October 2020.

“I am thrilled to see this project come to fruition,” said Roby Douglas, Vice-President of Natural Forces Solar. “Building a solar project on an existing facility in the middle of downtown Halifax has been a wonderful experience. We’re very proud that we were able to take Halifax Water’s vision and make it a reality.”

Natural Forces Solar has been involved in the development, design & construction of 14 projects that were awarded 20-year contracts through the Solar Electricity for Community Buildings program. Natural Forces Solar is a division of Natural Forces, a unique maritime-based private independent power producer that delivers renewable energy projects in partnership with local communities across Canada, the United States and Ireland.
