New Medical Officer of Health Appointments

Two new public health physicians are now practising in Nova Scotia.

Dr. Daniela Kempkens and Dr. Jessica Jackman are the province’s newest medical officers of health. They will work with the Nova Scotia Health Authority, the IWK Health Centre and other stakeholders to develop policies and programs that help all Nova Scotians lead healthier lives.

“I am very pleased that these two individuals have chosen to live and work in Nova Scotia,” said Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health. “I look forward to working with them to improve and protect the health of all Nova Scotians.”

Dr. Kempkens is based in Antigonish as medical officer of health for the eastern zone covering Cape Breton, Antigonish County and Guysborough County. Dr. Kempkens completed a public health and preventive medicine residency at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. She has worked as the associate medical officer of health and acting medical officer of health for the Halton Region Health Department in Ontario.

Dr. Jackman will work from Halifax and cover the central zone which is Halifax and surrounding rural communities. Dr. Jackman completed a public health and preventive medicine residency at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine earlier this year and completed a final residency placement in Nova Scotia’s central zone.

The role of medical officers of health is to improve the health and well-being of all Nova Scotians through health promotion, disease prevention and health protection initiatives.
