New Season of Public Events Celebrate Nova Scotia Heritage and Excellence


African Heritage Month, Canada’s last surviving naval corvette, the Halifax Music Co-op, and a world and Olympic class snowboarder are among the topics to be featured in the upcoming Evenings @ Government House public event series hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.

“It is my honour and privilege to host the Winter 2016 Evenings at Government House series, where the public will have the opportunity to learn about the interesting history and immense talent that exists in Nova Scotia,” said Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant. “Mrs. Grant and I invite the public to join us for these evenings at Government House, the ceremonial home of all Nova Scotians.”

The events are free and will be held at Government House, 1451 Barrington St., Halifax. People can register online at lt.gov.ns.ca or by calling 902-424-7001.

Registration for each event will open two weeks before, on a first-come first-served basis. Visit lt.gov.ns.ca for further details.

Scheduled events are:

— presentation entitled, “A Reflection on the Interconnectedness of Africville, the No. 2 Construction Battalion and the UN Declaration for the People of African Descent” by Sunday Miller, executive director of the Africville Heritage Trust, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 7-8:30 p.m.
— presentation entitled, “The Legacy of Commitment – The Contributions of African Nova Scotians in Society” by Russell Grosse, executive director of the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 7-8:30 p.m.
— presentation entitled, “It’s Time for a Woman on the Waterfront” by Janet Guildford, chair of the Halifax Women’s Historical Society, Tuesday, March 8, 7-8:30 p.m.
— demonstration of flower arranging by Neville MacKay, president, owner, designer at My Mother’s Bloomers, Tuesday, March 22, 7-8:30 p.m.
— mini-concert by the Halifax Music Co-op featuring selections from its recent concert tour including Handel’s Messiah and certain movements from Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata Tuesday. April 5, 7-8:30 p.m.
— presentation by noted military historian, J. Marc Milner entitled, “Canada’s role in the War at Sea and the ‘last corvette’ – HMCS SACKVILLE, Canada’s Naval Memorial”, Tuesday, April 19, 7-8:30 p.m.
— recently retired world and Olympic class athlete Alex Duckworth will talk about her life in the popular sport of snowboarding, Tuesday, May 3, 7-8:30 p.m.
— Chief Petty Officer First Class David Porter, CD (Ret’d) will give a talk on the Royal Canadian Navy’s participation in the Fleet Review at Spithead celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, Tuesday, May 17, 7-8:30 p.m.
