“Nico in Indo” wins Best Canadian Short at film festival

Local pro surfer Nico Manos and his colleague Julian Crick won the Best Canadian Short award at the recent Canadian Surf Film Festival (CSFF) for their film “Nico in Indo” (pictured above).

Cyrus Sutton and Ryan Burch won the award for Best Film for Stoked and Broke. The combination of humour, great surfing, and a poignant message about consumer culture made for an inspiring and thoughtful film.

The Best International Short award went to Mickey Smith for Dark Side of the Lens, and a Special Mention was given for Sean Mullens for Birthright.

The first ever Canadian Surf Film Festival took place September 30 to October 2 and was well attended by an enthusiastic Canadian surf community. Events included an opening reception and art show at Argyle Fine Art, film screenings at Empire Theaters Park Lane, and after parties at 2540.ca.

The festival was capped off with a sold-out show at the Paragon Theater featuring Matt Mays, Maddison Avenue and Andrew Hunter.
