Ninth Annual Hopscotch Festival

The 2018 Hopscotch Festival, the largest hip hop and youth-focused event of its kind in Atlantic Canada, is being held Sept. 28-30, 2018.

Now in its ninth year, the festival showcases more than 100 local artists as well as international headliners including Brother Aliand Murs – both making their Nova Scotia debut.

Brother Ali is an American rapper, community activist, and member of the Rhymesayers Entertainment hip hop collective. Themes of acceptance, personal faith and love inspire Ali’s music which has a worldwide youth following. Brother Ali has performed on every continent, collaborating with artists such as Public Enemy, Talib Kweli and Classified.

Murs is known as one of hip hop’s best lyricists and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous rap of all time. He has worked with artists such as 9th wonder and Tech N9ne.

The Hopscotch Kickoff event will take place Friday, Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. at Sniggily Wiggily’s and will feature Fresh Kils for a hometown performance, DJ Battles and the each-one-teach-one showcase. This event is 19+ and is free before 11 p.m. No registration required.

The festival’s main event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. at Dartmouth Ferry Terminal Park with an all-ages performance by both headliners. Other highlights include the creation of large scale murals by some of the municipality’s top artists and Hopscotch’s first Indigenous artist showcase. The event is free before 5 p.m. Tickets for those arriving after 5 p.m. can be purchased online atwww.hopscotchhalifax.com. Prices vary.

The festival will end at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, with an all-ages hip hop brunch and roundtable discussion at the Wooden Monkey restaurant in Dartmouth. Presented by Music Nova Scotia, this event is free for those who register.

The vision of Hopscotch is to unite, energize and support the region’s vibrant and diverse music and youth communities. These events provide a platform and the resources needed to advance the growth of local arts as a tool for positive youth engagement and dialogue at the individual, community and regional level.
