Nova Scotians are encouraged to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of outstanding citizens by nominating, or
renominating, people deserving of the Order of Nova Scotia.
Nominations for the province’s highest honour are being accepted until Friday, March 17 to be eligible for consideration this year. Recipients of the order are chosen for making significant and lasting contributions to their communities.
“It is important that we nominate and applaud the people of our province who strive to improve the lives of others and who seek excellence in their endeavours,” said Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant, Chancellor of the Order of Nova Scotia. “In doing so, we recognize their tremendous contributions to making Nova Scotia a very special place.”
Since its creation in 2001, 87 recipients have been invested into the order, including nine posthumously.
“From Yarmouth to Sydney, there are people in our communities who dedicate themselves to improving the cultural, social, and economic well-being of our province,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “The Order of Nova Scotia is a fitting way to draw attention to their efforts and give all of us a chance to say thank you.”
Jim Morrow of Windsor was invested into the order in 2016. Mr. Morrow, who serves as artistic director of Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, was recognized for his contributions to the province’s cultural sector.
“Receiving this honour was a remarkable moment. You don’t spend a lifetime working hard for this kind of recognition and never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be one of the recipients. To be honoured with the Order of Nova Scotia is possibly the best thing that can happen to someone.
“There are extraordinary individuals out there working in fields they love. I would encourage everyone to look around their community and think about who might be worthy of this honour.”
Nomination forms are available at Access Nova Scotia centres, Province House in Halifax, MLA and MP offices in Nova Scotia, municipal offices, and online at www.novascotia.ca/orderofnovascotia.
Nominations will be accepted by mail, fax, or email. Those wishing to renominate someone can submit a photocopy of the previous nomination package, with a new nomination form.
