Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant joined young people from across the province to celebrate the fourth annual Cadet Day today, Oct. 5.

The first Saturday in October honours cadets, and the volunteers and supporters of the programs, as proclaimed in the Sea, Army, Air and Navy League Cadets Day Act.

Lt.-Gov. Grant, cadets, officials and guests participated in a flag-raising at Province House to mark the occasion.

“Young Nova Scotians are learning valuable life skills as cadets, becoming good citizens and leaders, while having fun and making lifelong friends,” said Lt.-Gov. Grant. “As a parent and former cadet, I know very well the positive impact that cadet programs have on youth and their communities.”

Sea, Army, and Air Cadets are national programs for youth 12 to 18. They are a partnership between three civilian organizations — the Navy League, Army and Air Cadet Leagues of Canada — and the Canadian Armed Forces. The Navy League also sponsors the Navy League Cadets for youth 9 to 13.

Sea, Army, and Air Cadets offer fun and challenging experiences that develop good citizenship and leadership, while promoting physical fitness and awareness of the Canadian Armed Forces. Navy League Cadets promote patriotism, good citizenship, self-discipline and respect for others. High school students who take part in Cadets can also earn a credit on their transcript.

“Cadets has given me leadership qualities, organizational skills and respect for others,” said Chief Petty Officer First Class Halle Forde, 17, of the 24 Magnificent Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps in Shearwater.

“My passion is music and I’ve grown as a musician through Cadets,” said Ms. Forde, who was top Sea Cadet Musician in Canada in 2013. “I’m proud of the opportunities Cadets has given me, and I enjoy giving back by passing on what I have learned to help other cadets succeed.”

There are 3,600 Sea, Army, and Air Cadets in 87 corps and squadrons across Nova Scotia with a history that dates back more than a century. Navy League Cadets began in 1948, and 240 young people take part in the program in five corps across the province.
