Nova Scotia Energy Sector Employers Encouraged to Apply to Program

Small and medium-sized companies in the energy sector are encouraged to apply to a wage subsidy program that can help them temporarily hire post-secondary students and recent graduates.

The Energy Training Program provides eligible employers with 50 per cent of the cost of a salary, up to $7.50 per hour, during a student’s 12 to 17-week employment with the company. Work terms run from May to August.

“We’re supporting employers with specialized employment needs to connect with students preparing to enter into the energy sector,” said acting Energy Minister Michel Samson. “The program is in its 13th year of operation and has really contributed to the energy sector’s momentum.”

So far, the program has helped 119 Nova Scotia employers hire 306 students and recent graduates from Nova Scotia universities and community colleges.

“The program provides a convenient way for Summerhill Group to meet its business objectives while supplying our office with eager staff members equipped with the most recent knowledge in the field of energy efficiency,” said Jonathan Hudson, program manager.

Summerhill Group, a Canadian company, designs energy conservation programs and engagement strategies for businesses and consumers. It participated in the Energy Training Program in 2013 and 2014.

“The program provided me with the opportunity to gain professional experience with Summerhill Group, where I was able to contribute to energy efficiency programs affecting the day-to-day lives of Nova Scotians,” said Michael McKinnon, an intern with the company in 2014. “I am proud to be living in the Maritimes again, and I look forward to continuing my career in the energy sector here in Nova Scotia.”

Mr. McKinnon is pursuing his master of resource and environmental management degree at Dalhousie University.

Employers are encouraged to apply for the 2015 program by March 20.
