Nova Scotia Launches First Lebanese Heritage Month

Nova Scotia will soon be the first province in Canada to designate a month celebrating its Lebanese culture and heritage.

Premier Stephen McNeil will proclaim November as Lebanese Heritage Month on Thursday, Nov. 8 at an event at the Discovery Centre, in Halifax.

“The vision, work ethic, and strong community and family ties of Lebanese Nova Scotians have made our province more diverse and vibrant and help drive our economy,” said Premier McNeil. “I’m pleased to recognize the community’s significant contributions to the cultural, economic, religious and political landscape of Nova Scotia.”

The month will include a flag-raising event at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, in Halifax, on Thursday, Nov. 22, the 75th anniversary of Lebanese Independence Day. Also this month, the Canadian Lebanon Society of Halifax marks its 80th anniversary.

“On behalf of Lebanese Nova Scotians, I want to express how honoured and proud we are to mark November 2018 as the province’s first Lebanese Heritage Month,” said George Samara, president of the Canadian Lebanon Society of Halifax. “Having this special month dedicated to honouring our culture helps to preserve and promote our heritage and traditions, while also providing opportunities for all Nova Scotians to remember, celebrate and learn more about the contributions of Lebanese Nova Scotians.

“Lebanese communities across the province continue to play a significant role in fostering growth, prosperity and innovation in Nova Scotia.”

Lebanese immigrants first began arriving in Nova Scotia in the 1800s. For more information on Lebanese Heritage Month and the activities taking place across the province visit www.lebaneseinnovascotia.ca .
