Nova Scotia Technology Reduces System Data Loss, Downtime

Halifax-based topLog has developed a way to help detect, prevent and fix costly information technology system issues.

With an equity investment from Innovacorp, Nova Scotia’s early stage venture capital organization, topLog will finish developing and test its product in the next few months.

“In an age where almost everything is digitized, it’s no surprise there’s a large global market for solutions like topLog’s that can improve how IT systems are managed,” said Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson. “Innovative technology companies like topLog are vital to growing Nova Scotia’s economy.”

The $250,000 seed investment from Innovacorp will finance the company’s beta testing, set to start in February.

“Our technology digs into system log data and shows the system’s normal and abnormal activities,” said Ozge Yeloglu, topLog co-founder and president. “Eighty per cent of system downtime is spent on problem diagnostics. With topLog, IT staff can spend their time dealing with issues, not trying to detect them. This results in less system downtime and data loss, which can lead to big savings for companies.”

Typically, when a system goes down, the system administrator has to manually review and assess the network’s log files to find the cause and note it. topLog’s solution automates that, analyzing the system’s activities so administrators are alerted when anything odd happens, avoiding downtime.

topLog can easily integrate with existing products and feedback from testing partners has been extremely positive.

topLog was founded in 2012 by Ms. Yeloglu and Patrick LaRoche, computer science doctoral students from Dalhousie University, and Tokunbo Makanju, who has a PhD from Dalhousie. The team recently graduated from the Launch36 accelerator program based in New Brunswick and secured a $150,000 investment from BDC Venture Capital.

“The topLog team possesses deep technical expertise capable of addressing the substantial and costly pain associated with system downtime. The product’s proactive nature will give it a significant advantage over the competition,” said Dawn Umlah, investment manager at Innovacorp. “We look forward to working closely with topLog as it rolls out its technology.”
