Nova Scotia Welcomes Investment in Ocean Sector

Atlantic Canada will host Canada’s oceans supercluster.

The federal government announced today, Feb. 15, that the oceans initiative is one of five economic sectors across the country that will share in up to $950 million over the next five years. The federal funding will be matched by the private sector.

Premier Stephen McNeil congratulated the group of private sector partners and post-secondary institutions from the Atlantic provinces on its successful proposal to advance the region’s oceans sector.

“In the Atlantic region, our connection to the ocean has shaped our way of life, and it continues to support traditional industries and foster innovation and globally competitive business,” said Premier McNeil. “This announcement reflects our leadership position in many areas, and I am excited about what is yet to come in research, science and technology and new and diverse business opportunities. It’s an incredible opportunity for our economy and our people.

“My congratulations to all of those who work and study in our oceans for making today’s announcement possible. I’d also like to acknowledge the federal government for making this historic investment in our region.”
