Nova Scotians can apply for the annual moose licence lottery starting today, May 1.

This year 345 licences will be available in five moose-management zones within Victoria and Inverness counties in Cape Breton. They are the only counties in the province where licensed moose hunting is permitted.

To be eligible to apply, an applicant must qualify as a resident of Nova Scotia, have a Nova Scotia Wildlife Resources Card and be at least 18 years old by September 17. Hunters who held a moose hunting licence in the last five years (2013-2017) cannot apply this year.

Applications are accepted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until midnight, May 31. For an application fee of $9.25 (HST included), hunters can apply:
— online at, novascotia.ca/natr/draws/moosedraw or
— by calling 1-900-565-3337 from a landline phone.

Online applications require a Visa or Mastercard. Phone applications will be directly billed to your landline phone.

Hunters are encouraged to carefully consider which season and zone they apply for. Terrain, access and available guiding services differ considerably from one moose-management zone to another. Weather conditions can also vary between the northern and southern zones.

More information, including number of available licences per season and zone is available at https://novascotia.ca/natr/draws/moosedraw/ .

Licences will be drawn June 21.
