Nova Scotians Encouraged to Tune in to Canada Games Opening Ceremony

A sea of blue will fill the Centrium arena in Red Deer, Alta. on Friday, Feb. 15, when Team Nova Scotia athletes march in the opening ceremony of the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

The opening ceremony will air on TSN3 at 10:30 p.m. Nova Scotia time. Team Nova Scotia will also be sharing the on-the-ground experience through its social media channels.

Eighteen-year-old gymnast Alex Watters of Williamswood, Halifax Regional Municipality, is Nova Scotia’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies. Alex is a first-year engineering student at Dalhousie University, juggling school and about 20 hours a week of training.

“It’s a huge honour to have been chosen as the flag-bearer and I’m super excited to carry the flag in the opening ceremonies which were very motivating in 2015,” said Mr. Watters. “I am very much looking forward to the games, it’s such a great experience!”

The ceremony features musical acts, athletes, performers, dignitaries, fans, families and the audience at home coming together to celebrate the athletes of the games.

“The opening ceremony is an overwhelmingly positive experience for the athletes and highlights the magnitude of the Canada Games,” said Cathy Burton, Nova Scotia’s chef de mission. “The games is the complete unification of a country in celebration of sport.”

During the opening ceremony, the Roly McLenahan Canada Games torch will be carried into the Centrium to light the cauldron and officially start the games. Country artist Brad Kissel and Franco Albertan singer Mireille Moquin will perform.

First week sports are artistic gymnastics, artistic swimming, biathlon, boxing, freestyle skiing, men’s hockey, ringette, table tennis, speedskating and wheelchair basketball.

Second week sports are alpine and para alpine skiing, archery, badminton, cross country skiing, curling, figure skating, judo, snowboard, squash, trampoline and women’s hockey.

TSN will feature 40 hours of Canada Games coverage, with all footage available for live-streaming through the network’s app. Webcast coverage is featured on www.CanadaGames.live, the Canada Games webcast portal.
