Nova Scotians to Welcome the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh

Tens of thousands of people are expected to welcome Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh during their June 28-30 visit to Halifax.

"This is a time to celebrate our past, present and future," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "I encourage everyone to come out and show the Royal Couple the warmth, enthusiasm and hospitality that Nova Scotians are known for worldwide."

The Royal visit comes at a time when Canada is celebrating the Royal Navy's centennial.

"It's especially fitting that we can share this important milestone with Her Majesty and His Royal Highness, as we recognize the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, our country with such pride and distinction," said Premier Dexter, who also serves as the Minister responsible for Military Relations.

"The men and women of the Forces make sacrifices every day to help make the world a better place."

Peter Kelly, Mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality, said that residents and council of Halifax Regional Municipality are eagerly anticipating the visit of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

"We are delighted and honoured at the prospect of having the Royal Couple in our midst once again," said Mayor Kelly. "I know they will be impressed by the warmth and depth of our welcome."

Nova Scotia is a culturally diverse province steeped in history and tradition. With a large contingent of international media relaying the visit to a worldwide audience, it presents an excellent opportunity to showcase the attributes that make Nova Scotia unique.

"I look forward to sharing our culture and way of life with the Royal Couple," said Premier Dexter. "I would like this visit to be as memorable for them, as it will be for visitors and Nova Scotians alike."

The last time Her Majesty and His Royal Highness came to Nova Scotia was in 1994. Photos of that visit, and many others, can be found in the Royal Visits photo albums and scrapbooks, which will be on display at Province House. The commemorative collection will be available for public viewing June 14 to July 6, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A website dedicated to the visit, www.gov.ns.ca/royalvisit, will be launched today, May 19. Details of events will be available on the website as the visit draws closer as well as a photo gallery with event pictures added throughout the visit. The Royal Couple will also visit Manitoba and Ontario during their Canadian tour, which concludes July 6.
