It is time to recognize those who make life better for us in the province by promoting human rights and Nova Scotians are being asked to help out.

Nominations are being sought of people and organizations from around the province for the 2013 Human Rights Awards.

The awards are presented by the Human Rights Commission and Partners for Human Rights. Nominations should include people or groups that support projects which advance human rights. The award categories are individual, organization and youth.

“There are people and organizations in the province who work tirelessly and with very little recognition to raise awareness of human rights, “said Minister responsible for the Human Rights Act Ross Landry. “These awards provide us with an opportunity to thank them and share their work with others.”

The awards will be given to the winners at the International Human Rights Day celebration, Dec. 10. The theme this year is Speak Up Against Discrimination.

“At the community level, people and organizations throughout Nova Scotia are making a huge difference in educating others about human rights,” said Tracey Williams, interim director and CEO, Human Rights Commission. “All of us benefit from the commitment and passion they bring to their work.”

Award winners in 2012 were Jake MacDonald of Wolfville, Christine Porter of Sydney, Avalon Sexual Assault Centre in Halifax and No Glory Productions, Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 27. For more information and nomination forms go to
