Lizzie Borden, a $6 million dollar made for TV movie for Lifetime, has finished production in the province, creating jobs and shooting at various locations around Nova Scotia.

“Attracting investments of this size creates good jobs for our talented workforce and generates economic spinoffs for the local economy,” said Graham Steele, Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism. “We are delighted that the Lizzie Borden team selected Nova Scotia as their filming destination.”

The biopic follows the story of Lizzie Borden, the infamous woman acquitted of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe in Fall River, Mass., in 1892.

Local production company Magic Rock Productions, with the help of Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia, worked to secure this project – promoting the province’s locations, incentives and talented crew. Magic Rock is the local team behind productions such as the Columbia Tri-Star feature film Jumping the Broom, the Emmy nominated Memory Keeper’s Daughter and Bag of Bones, the Stephen King miniseries for A and E starring Pierce Brosnan.

“We were delighted with the production opportunities that Nova Scotia provided us,” said Sony Pictures Television executive producer Judith Verno. “There are a many details that go into a period piece. Finding the right locations and getting to work with such a terrific crew were paramount to the success of the shoot.

“We were very fortunate to work in Nova Scotia where all aspects of the production exceeded our expectations, including the beautiful locations, and especially the dedicated and experienced crew that made our vision a reality and who worked so well even under time and budget constraints. We are looking forward to our next opportunity to film in Nova Scotia.”

The production stars Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow), Clea DuVall (Argo), along with local actors John Dunsworth (Trailer Park Boys) and Shawn Doyle (The Disappeared). They have shot in various locations around Nova Scotia including Lunenburg, Hantsport, Windsor and various locations within Halifax Regional Municipality such as Granville Mall, South Park St. Cemetery and King’s College.

“Michael Mahoney, Valerie Halman and the Magic Rock team were instrumental in securing this production for the province,” said Lisa Bugden, president and CEO of Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia. “Throughout the years this local production company has worked with many studios to bring guest productions to Nova Scotia. They are champions of the province and help to profile our accomplishments to international audiences.”

Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia is the lead development agency for the creative industries in the province. Providing a variety of loans, investments, programs and services, the agency works to support the growth and development of Nova Scotia’s creative enterprises.
