Labour and Advanced Education Minister Frank Corbett sends condolences to the family and loved ones of a fisherman who lost his life, Tuesday, July 23, on a fishing vessel off the southwestern coast of Nova Scotia.

The 55-year-old male suffered fatal injuries after falling from the crow’s nest, a structure with a fixed ladder, or spar, in the center of the vessel used to spot swordfish.

“This morning, someone’s family member didn’t come home from work. This is a tragedy that is happening too often,” said Mr. Corbett. “When a life is tragically lost, provincial investigators take every step within their power to find out what happened and to protect other workers.”

An investigation is underway. No stop work orders have been issued to date.

“This is a tragedy. Our government, in partnership with the fisheries safety association, will continue the crucial work to strengthen safety practices in the commercial fishery,” said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau. “My condolences to the family.”

This is the 16th workplace fatality this year. Thirteen were from an acute sudden injury and three were from chronic long-term illness or injury.

Thirty-two Nova Scotians died at work last year. Ten were acute and 22 were chronic.
